Creative headaches

Some creative executions result in non-standard formats which can create unforeseen problems. One of our large mail order clients briefed us to machine enclose a card into a very small square envelope, seal the envelope and then inkjet the recipient's name and address on the outer envelope

Unfortunately, it soon became clear that it would be impossible to machine enclose the card and yet it was vital that the mailing was despatched within the original time frame. With more than 500,000 packs to be made up, this proved to be something of a challenge.

All possible resources from a dedicated production team were quickly deployed to produce sufficient quantity to feed our Prism Ink Jet machine operating at 23,000 packs per hour. As you can imagine, the two 'baggers' from our production team took days to recover once the project had been successfully completed!

Appeal for help

Mistakes sometimes happen and we pride ourselves on helping to find solutions for our clients. A recent doordrop for a large charity posed a slight problem when we discovered that the reply envelope was the same size as the outer - meaning that it would not machine enclose.

As the quantity was for 3 million packs, it would have been an expensive option for the client to re-order the envelopes. It would have also seriously compromised the distribution arrangements which had already been pre-booked.

The solution was simplicity itself. We folded all 3 million envelopes using our Morgana UFO folder and integrated this activity with the other lasering and enclosing processes. All done at a fraction of the cost of re-ordering reply envelopes.

In credit

Mailing technology is constantly evolving and our task is to help our clients make the most of these new capabilities and the cost savings that can be made. As a consequence, we actively encourage our clients to visit our site and discuss their mailing briefs.

One of the less active divisions of a financial service client sent us a brief in which we were asked to print and then hand match a lasered letter with an addressed envelope. During the subsequent site visit, we demonstrated the benefits of automated matching using our Kalmar enclosing machines fitted with OCR camera recognition.

A small example - but it resulted in cost savings, a higher level of accuracy and a happier, enlightened client.
